More than 350 people celebrated the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birthday by attending the dedication of Lincoln Landing, a new interpretive park in historic downtown Lockport. Hitchcock Design Group led a team of consultants to assist the Give Something Back Foundation, the philanthropic organization that provided the project funding, and the Will County Historical Society in revitalizing the two-acre area into a civic park and community gateway. While the site is a fresh, attractive destination in downtown Lockport, the true value of this civic space lies in its layers of cultural and historical interpretation. The park features educational elements that capture the heritage of the Public Landing as a key port along the Illinois and Michigan (I&M) Canal and Abraham Lincoln's connection to the waterway, including a unique sculpture that portrays the nation's sixteenth President as a young Illinois legislator.
The Will County Historical Society intends to utilize the space for programming opportunities, and the Foundation, working with the area school districts and Lewis University, has developed an extensive curriculum program focused on the Landing and an exhibit space in the adjacent historic Canal House. Peppered throughout the park are medallions and stone carvings that depict Lockport's history and the area's prominent residents.
Said Steve Cardamone, Executive Director of the Give Something Back Foundation, ‘This space is a result of the cooperative effort of seven governmental, community and philanthropic agencies. It was satisfying to work with so many people that wanted to do it right, because they knew it was the right thing to do.' As one of only six Lincoln Bicentennial Commission endorsed historic sites in the United States and the only endorsed new urban park in Illinois, Lincoln Landing is truly a nationally recognized destination.
