Project Details
Crystal City was historically an inward-facing district lacking vibrant public spaces. Hunter Reynolds Jewell designed National Landing in 1987; however, it was surrounded by brutalist office buildings, connected through underground infrastructure to transit facilities. The park remained inactive outside weekdays, becoming less used as office vacancies increased. In 2018, Amazon selected National Landing for its new headquarters, prompting developers to propose reimagining Crystal City as a mixed-use community. This renovation demonstrates how privately owned spaces can become a dynamic urban green supporting social and economic vitality. Since reopening in 2023, National Landing attracted thousands, establishing an active, verdant community. Completed 2021.
