Project Details
Upon receiving a research grant through SmithGroup’s Exploration Grant program in 2023, Landscape Architect Tom Martin, PLA and Urban Planner Caeley Hynes, AICP kicked off a design process centering research, analysis, and community-engagement around Chicago’s alleyways. The research topic explores the concept of repurposing alleyway systems as an alternative framework of non-motorized connections, using the City of Chicago as a case study. While many singular alleyway activations have occurred in Chicago in the past decade, this research is grounded in geospatial data analysis, and proposes a city-wide, connected system of suitable alleyways that can close the gap in access.
