Project Details

Many land-grant universities face the question of acknowledging the 11 million acres of Indigenous land that was taken to build the university system. While most have formed committees or adopted a land acknowledgment statement, specific value-driven actions are needed to support their intent. The Campus Landscape Master Plan (CLMP) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign can serve as a model for universities across the United States by outlining a strategic project-based approach to recognize Native communities in a tangible way, while also committing the campus to an ecologically resilient landscape that will strengthen the university’s position as a global leader.
