Project Details
In Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood, an increased demand for communal green space and access to locally grown foods was prompted following the pandemic in 2022, while an existing urban garden had become overgrown, underutilized, and no longer served community needs. Once a space dedicated to the black roots and communal heritage of the community, the garden was about to see a rebirth. The freshly reimagined Winthrop Family Historical Garden was rededicated as a commemorative green space. Celebrating the neighborhood’s rich community legacy, the garden now provides a multi-functional space geared towards food production and education, gathering opportunities, markets, neighborhood events and more.
